Company History

From its roots over thirty five years ago, Wilderness Log Homes has grown to be one of the leaders in the log home industry.

In 1972, a company was founded in Plymouth Wisconsin by an entrepreneur from New Mexico who had been building log cabins for hunters as a sideline. He chose Plymouth because of it’s proximity to the forests of the North Woods and supply of lumber. In response to local energy codes in the early 70’s, he developed the Insul-R construction product around that time. The Insul-R product sandwiched a conventionally constructed 2x6 framing and insulation between 2 half logs. Wilderness was the first to offer this product and continues to offer more styles than any other company.

In 1996 when the original founder chose to retire, a group of businessmen and log home enthusiasts purchased the company and they continue to run the company today.

In 1998, Wilderness Log Homes purchased a local competitor, Greatwood Log Homes.

The two companies merged in order to take advantage of production and administrative efficiencies. Today the Wilderness Brand is on the Insul-R product and the Greatwood brand is the traditional full log product.

Many of our competitors purchase logs milled by other companies or are in other businesses besides log homes. Wilderness owns and operates its own mills and we manufacture nothing but logs for residential and commercial building.

Wilderness has always been an environmentally friendly company. No natural resources are wasted. Using modern manufacturing technology allows the maximum out put from each log and what cannot be used for log homes is sold to landscapers, farmers, equestrian uses and home heating wood pellets.

Today, Wilderness Log Homes continues the tradition of providing high quality products to its customers. Wilderness is a member of the Log Home Council and National Association of Home Builders
